Universities and the major accounting bodies maintain there is a shortage of accountants in Australia.
But a growing body of data shows the demand for accounting graduates has slowed as the industry undergoes a shake-up due to outsourcing, off-shoring and automation.
The Australian employment data shows that more than one in five accounting graduates seeking any type of full-time job cannot find one after finishing university.
