1. NewSouth Innovations (NSi) connects student innovators with industry

Upcoming entrepreneurs have showcased their ideas to leading innovators and UNSW alumni at a networking event hosted by NewSouth Innovations (NSi).

2. New student visa rules coming soon

The Australian Government has moved to loosen visa restrictions to attract international students.

From next year, tougher restrictions on students from countries with the highest risk of visa fraud will be scrapped, effectively reducing the cash such applicants are required to have in the bank to support themselves during their study.

The government has also fast-tracked a decision to extend streamlined visa processing beyond the university sector to 22 TAFEs and private providers that deliver bachelor degrees and higher qualifications.

3. Transport concession for International Students in Victoria(Melbourne) ?

Details of a new strategy for international education are expected to be revealed over the weekend. They include a transport fare concession scheme, something for which international students have long agitated.

4. The Crouch Innovation Centre

A new centre for innovation at UNSW will provide world-class facilities designed to position Sydney as a major centre for innovation in the Asia Pacific region. The centre will be housed within a new building on the UNSW campus, next to the Australian School of Business.

5. International Students favourite destination in Australia is?

The Victorian Government’s new international education strategy strongly positions Victoria as a destination of choice for international students, according to Swinburne University of Technology Vice-President (International and Future Students), Jeffrey Smart.

6. Australian cricketing legend and University of Wollongong (UOW) brand ambassador, Adam Gilchrist, AM, will captain TeamUOW on the MS Sydney to Gong Bike Ride, on this Sunday 3 November.

7. Professor Rob Parton, a cell biologist from The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) will receive an Achievement Award from the NHMRC for achieving a top-ranked grant out of more than 3500 Project Grant applications submitted to the council in 2012.
Research projects understanding how cells migrate and developing improved treatments for drug-resistant tuberculosis have been recognised as some of the best in the country by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

8. A global survey measuring university graduates’ employability has ranked The Australian National University, Canberra (ANU) first of all Australian universities.

9. Entries are now open for The 2014 oZAPP Awards which is a Curtin University initiative aimed at helping app developers build and launch their apps.
