The Coalition wants to fast-track the "special investor visa" scheme created by Labor to lure more entrepreneurs from China, India and the Middle East.
So far, 28 of the "888-class" visas have been approved, including 15 in Victoria, nine in NSW and two each in Queensland and Western Australia. The first was a Chinese toy maker who invested $5 million in Victorian Government bonds to bring his young family to Australia.
But the scheme has sparked concern among organisations that help bring medical professionals to Australia.
Rod Jackson, chief executive of the Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria, said everyone should face the same entrance tests. "I don’t agree with it at all. We want people to come here with training, not just buy their way here," he said. "We’ve got to make sure all our IMG’s (International Medical Graduates) are fully qualified to undertake their roles." He said there was still a shortage of doctors, nurses and specialists in some areas.
But Migration Council chief executive Carla Wilshire backed the "significant investor" scheme, saying the number of people was a "tiny fraction" of overall migration.
